Why remove a stump?
- Stumps are a trip hazard and get in the way of mowing
- Rotting stumps can attract termites, carpenter ants and other pests
- Some stumps send up new sprouts that keep coming back
- They take up space you could use for grass, a garden, a patio or a fence
How stump grinding works
A stump grinder uses a spinning cutting wheel to chew the stump into wood chips, usually several inches below ground level. The chips can be used to backfill the hole or hauled away, and you can top the area with soil and seed or sod.
Compact grinders can fit through many backyard gates, so even stumps in fenced yards can usually be reached.
Grinding vs. full removal
Grinding takes the stump below the surface and leaves the deeper roots to break down over time. It's the most common choice and the least disruptive to your yard. Full removal pulls out the stump and main roots, which takes heavy equipment and leaves a large hole, so it's usually only done when you're building right where the tree stood.
What affects the price
- The stump's diameter and how many stumps you have
- How hard the wood is and how large the surface roots are
- Access, such as narrow gates, slopes or fences
- Whether you want the chips hauled away
Before grinding: underground lines need to be marked first. In North Carolina, call 811 before digging; a good crew will handle this or confirm it's done.
Common Questions
How deep do you grind a stump?
Typically several inches below the soil, which is enough to cover with soil and grass. Ask for deeper grinding if you plan to plant a new tree or build in that spot.
What happens to the wood chips?
They can be used to fill the hole and as mulch, or hauled away for an extra fee.
Can a new tree be planted in the same spot?
It's usually better to plant a few feet away, since leftover roots and chips take time to break down.
Can you grind a stump in a fenced backyard?
Usually, yes. Many grinders fit through standard gates. Mention the gate width when you call.
